Kuala Lumpur with Kids:
3-Month Stay

A Quiet Family’s Gentle Adjustment to City Life 🙂

Hello, we’re a worldschooling family who may be shy with people but endlessly curious about the world.
Instead of busy sightseeing trips, we prefer slow, lifestyle-based travel that matches our family’s pace.

For this 3-month stay, we chose Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Among many Southeast Asian cities, KL felt less like a tourist destination and more like a city you can actually live in.

More than sightseeing, we wanted:

✔ Natural English exposure for our child
✔ A city where our family could adapt comfortably
✔ Easy access to daily food and living needs

Kuala Lumpur matched these conditions better than we expected.

A bustling urban street at night, filled with a diverse crowd of people walking. Prominent storefronts including a Dior shop and a large illuminated Pavilion sign can be seen, alongside various advertising displays. The scene captures the vibrant atmosphere of a lively shopping district.

🏙 Why We Chose Kuala Lumpur for a 3-Month Family Stay

KL is not a flashy resort city or a romantic European town.
It’s a well-balanced city for real life.

  • English is widely spoken
  • Living costs are relatively stable
  • Indoor lifestyle is easy thanks to large shopping malls
  • Extremely wide food selection
  • A big city that still gives you breathing space

For a shy family like ours, KL wasn’t overwhelming or overstimulating — just comfortably in between.

🚖 Transportation in Kuala Lumpur (Car-Free Living Tips)

KL can feel inconvenient without a car — but interestingly, it’s also very livable without owning one.

✔ Grab – the most commonly used ride app
✔ Bolt – often cheaper, so price comparison is worth it

Having both apps installed really helps because:

👉 The same distance can have different prices
👉 During rush hour, switching apps helps you get a ride faster

Tip: Cars usually have strong air conditioning, and drivers are generally kind. Traveling with a child was rarely stressful.

💻 Remote Work & Digital Nomad
Environment in Kuala Lumpur

During this stay, I was working on multiple illustration design projects, so having a stable work setup was essential. KL turned out to be a great city for digital work.

  • Stable internet speed
  • No issues uploading large files
  • Good café WiFi
  • Many cafés with power outlets

Tip:
Cafés inside shopping malls are especially work-friendly (aircon, outlets, easy to sit longer). Condo WiFi in residential areas is also generally reliable.

🧒 Kids’ Life & International Learning Environment

KL is a very international city with many expat families. English exposure happens naturally in daily life.

✔ Children from diverse nationalities
✔ English used in everyday situations
✔ Play-based learning culture

Even a shy child like ours could slowly adjust. The atmosphere felt gentle rather than competitive.

📚 Private Home Tutors in Kuala Lumpur

Home tutoring is also an option. We used Superprof for English lessons, and the first trial class was free.

Platforms include:
✔ Superprof
✔ Tutoroo
✔ TeachMeNow

Tip:
Home lessons are great for managing a child’s energy level. Try tutors that offer trial sessions first.

🍽 Food Life in Kuala Lumpur (One of the Biggest Advantages)

The number one factor that increased our quality of life in KL = FOOD.

Daily life often revolves around large shopping malls, where you can find major international chains:

✔ Cafés
Starbucks
Coffee Bean
% Arabica
Zus Coffee

✔ Restaurant Chains
Din Tai Fung
Sushi Zanmai
Madam Kwan’s
Chili’s
Nando’s

Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Western food were all easily available — which made life very convenient with a child.

✔ We especially loved that Kyochon Chicken has branches here. We sometimes ate at the restaurant, and on busy days, ordered delivery.
We also recommend Hanam Pig House for samgyeopsal, soju, and naengmyeon — a bit pricey, but perfect for relieving stress.

🍣 Sushi in KL: Best Supermarket Finds

If you love sushi, here’s a small tip.

Isetan Food Court & Supermarket

👉 Much wider sushi selection than typical supermarkets
👉 Fresh sashimi quality
👉 Evening discounts = great value

🛍 Where to Shop and Live Comfortably in KL

Life in Kuala Lumpur often centers around major shopping malls such as:

Pavilion
Suria KLCC
Mid Valley
The Gardens

Because of the hot weather, indoor living is the norm — which actually makes moving around with kids easier and more comfortable.

🏠 Two Types of Family Accommodation in KL (Our Experience)

We stayed in two Airbnbs.

1️⃣ Hotel-style residence

  • Easy pool access
  • Quiet and private
  • Well-maintained facilities

2️⃣ Large condo apartment

  • Great views
  • Better value
  • Pool & gym included
  • More people, so timing matters

Tip:
Many complexes are huge, so choosing based on your family’s personality matters. Facilities are quieter during daytime hours.

🌿 What It Really Feels Like Living in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is a big city — lots of cars, buildings, and people.
Yet somehow…

It feels relaxed within the busyness.

It doesn’t rush you.
It doesn’t pressure you.
Even a shy family like ours could adjust slowly.

✔ Good for working
✔ Comfortable for kids
✔ Easy transportation
✔ Food is never a problem
✔ Suitable for families who need time to adapt

KL isn’t an intense travel destination.
It’s a city that suits families who prefer to live quietly and settle in at their own pace.
